Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Indian Captain Smit Machchhar for his actions in preventing a potential mid-air disaster aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

Mr. Netanyahu hailed Captain Machchhar as a "true hero" and acknowledged his "extraordinary bravery" after the pilot was wounded during an altercation with his co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft, according to reports from The Hindu and Al Jazeera.

The Prime Minister stated that despite being stabbed and seriously injured, Captain Machchhar "fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker – preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster," Al Jazeera reported. Mr. Netanyahu further emphasized that Captain Machchhar's intervention saved the lives of 174 individuals, a group that included both Israeli citizens and other nationals.

The Mid-Air Incident and Emergency Landing

Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, transmitted emergency signals and executed a sharp descent, The Hindu reported. Al Jazeera specified that the emergency alert was sent shortly after the aircraft's takeoff on Wednesday morning.

The flight subsequently diverted and made an emergency landing at Prince Sultan Bin Abdel Aziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Following the landing, all passengers were confirmed to be safe and accounted for, according to Al Jazeera.

The co-pilot, who stands accused of stabbing Captain Machchhar in an alleged attempt to seize control of the aircraft, was arrested after the plane's arrival in Saudi Arabia, Al Jazeera stated. News website Ynet, citing Israeli officials, reported that the co-pilot is an Omani national and is suspected of having intended to crash the aircraft, The Hindu noted. The Hindu also reported that the Indian captain fought with the co-pilot to prevent the aircraft from crashing, with Israeli passengers later assisting in subduing the co-pilot.

Captain Machchhar is currently admitted to a hospital in Tabuk city, located in northwest Saudi Arabia, where he is receiving necessary medical attention, Al Jazeera reported. India’s embassy in Riyadh confirmed in a post on X that the "brave Indian pilot of Flydubai" is reported to be in stable condition, though the embassy is awaiting a full health update.

Following the emergency landing in Tabuk, a rescue flight, also operated by Flydubai, was dispatched to transport all affected passengers to their intended final destination, Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport. This rescue flight arrived at the airport at 15:34 GMT, Al Jazeera stated.

Upon the passengers' arrival in Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Netanyahu was present at the airport to receive them, Al Jazeera reported.
