A robbery suspect died under suspicious circumstances in Nagpur yesterday after being apprehended by citizens following a home invasion, according to marathi.abplive.com. Police have launched an investigation into the death, which occurred after the suspect was taken into custody.
The incident took place yesterday afternoon in Model Mill Colony, within the Beltarodi police station area. Two individuals, reportedly posing as Zomato delivery personnel, gained entry into the home of the Dharmik family. Usha Dharmik and her daughter-in-law, Pranali Dharmik, were present at the time, marathi.abplive.com reported.
The robbers allegedly threatened Usha Dharmik with a knife and demanded her jewelry. Hearing the commotion, Pranali Dharmik retreated to an inner room, locked the door, and alerted neighbors for help. The intruders then snatched gold jewelry from Usha Dharmik before fleeing the residence, according to marathi.abplive.com.
Shortly after the robbery, local citizens observed two suspicious individuals in the vicinity, who appeared to have changed their clothes. They apprehended one of the suspects, who reportedly gave evasive answers, raising their suspicion, marathi.abplive.com stated. Esakal identified the apprehended individual as a thief whose death was caused by mob beating, while marathi.abplive.com stated that local citizens caught one suspect.
Police were subsequently called and took the apprehended suspect, identified as Sumedh Gajbhiye, into custody. Gajbhiye, who has a prior criminal record for theft, reportedly became unwell after being brought to the police station. He was then transported to a government medical hospital, where doctors declared him dead, marathi.abplive.com reported.
The circumstances surrounding Gajbhiye's death have led to discussions regarding whether it was a result of mob beating. Police have rejected these claims, stating that preliminary findings suggest a natural death, according to marathi.abplive.com. They have registered an accidental death case. Police further stated that no clear injuries were observed on Gajbhiye's body when he was taken into custody, and CCTV footage from the incident site does not show him being assaulted.
A local corporator, however, claimed that while some beating might have occurred during the apprehension, Gajbhiye was conscious and in good condition when handed over to the police, marathi.abplive.com reported. Esakal's headline, published yesterday, explicitly stated, "Thief dies due to mob beating; second accomplice absconding."
Police stated that Gajbhiye confessed to the theft during initial questioning. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received. Authorities have urged citizens not to believe rumors, marathi.abplive.com added. The second individual involved in the robbery remains at large, according to Esakal.
